(KFVS) - A 20-year health analysis by America's Health Rankings Report finds the United States made strides in disease treatment, but not prevention.
The study cites smoking as the greatest health challenge of the past 20 years and warns that obesity is likely to be the next national health crisis.
The United States spends more per capita than any other nation on health care, including $1.5 trillion in medical costs associated with chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
One in five Americans still smoke despite a drop in smoking by 38 percent over the past 20 years. One in four Americans are considered obese and if the trend continues, 103 million American adults — or 43 percent of the population — will be considered obese by 2018.
Here is a listing of how states measured up in the 2009 rankings:
TOP FIVE STATES
1. Vermont
2. Utah
3. Massachusetts
4. Hawaii
5. New Hampshire
BOTTOM FIVE STATES
46. South Carolina
47. Louisiana
48. Alabama
49. Oklahoma
50. Mississippi
