CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The leaders of three Heartland Colleges agree on a plan to bring community college services to Cape Girardeau.

The Cape Community College Coalition signed off on a plan drafted by Southeast Missouri State University, Three Rivers Community College and Mineral Area College. That agreement, with a few final changes, will then head to the Missouri Department of Higher Education for approval.

Southeast president, Dr. Ken Dobbins, calls the program a real benefit, especially to local high school students who qualify for community college tuition help under the state's A+ program.

"We have more high schools now with students who are eligible for A+," says Dr. Dobbins. "And A+ is very significant when it comes to financial aid."

Dr. Dobbins also tells Heartland News he hopes the agreement will keep area college students closer to home, and not just for two years.

"I'm hoping what'll happen is the retention rate of those students will be as high as what we have now for those students and we'll get them back into a junior and senior year," Dr. Dobbins said.

If the plan is approved by the Department of Higher Education, high school students in Cape Girardeau County could begin taking community college classes as soon as Summer of Fall 2010.
