(KFVS) - Communities across the Heartland celebrate Veteran's Day.

Folks gathered in Cape Girardeau for a event at Freedom Corner in Capaha Park.  About 40 people were there at the corner of Broadway to pay tribute to those who've died in combat and those who are still fighting for our country.

Sikeston spent the morning honoring troops of men and women that fight for our freedom.  A 21 gun salute and taps kicked off the day.

The city of Dexter honored Veterans with a downtown parade.  The celebration started shortly after 11 a.m. Quite a crowd of people gathered to display their gratitude and support.  Members of the high school color guard and marching band participated.  An entire group of veterans rode in the parade.

Similar parades took place in Anna, Illinois and Jackson, Missouri.

A prayer service took place at the Veteran's Memorial Park in downtown Carbondale, Illinois.  SIU President Glenn Poshard read a poem he wrote in honor of our nation's heroes.

Folks in Marion, Illinois held a candlelight vigil.

A day after honoring the 13 victims of the shootings at Fort Hood, Texas, President Barack Obama has marked Veterans Day by placing a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery. The president stood silently, with his hand on his heart, as a bugler sounded taps.

Veteran's Day became a legal holiday in 1938.
