Missouri DNR announces big layoffs

JEFFERSON CITY, MO (KFVS) - Just as some were hoping the recession was over the Department of Natural Resources in Missouri announced it plans to cut about one hundred jobs in the coming weeks.

Heartland News spoke with DNR Information Officer Sue Holst who says the cuts are because of the economy.

"This is because the economy is effecting us just like it is everyone else," said Holst.

"State parks system is funded by a one tenth of one percent sales tax and we get half of that. That's about three fourths of our budget. The other part comes from camping fees and concession fees."

That money has not been able to keep up with the opertations of the state parks system.

The DNR has around seven hundred full time employees, so one hundred layoffs is a big chunk of their workforce.

Holst says some cuts will have to do with senority, "Some employees with senority may be able to transfer or take other positions" Holst said.

"Its going to take a couple of weeks for us to determine and go through this process to what parks and sites will be effected" said Holst.

No local job losses are known yet, but out of the 85 historic state parks and sites, almost twenty are in Southeast Missouri.

Holst says Missouri's DNR relies heavily on volunteers and now with these cuts, that will be more true than ever.
