PASCOLA, MO (KFVS) - A man is in custody awaiting charges in connection with the injury of his girlfriend's two-year-old daughter, said Pemiscot County Lt. Ryan Holder.

According to Holder, Pemiscot County Sheriff Tommy Greenwell said investigators learned the suspect, who will not be identified until formal charges are filed, struck the child in the face "a couple of times" causing serious injury.  The girl was airlifted to Lebonheur Childrens' Hospital in Memphis.

The extent of the girl's injuries are not known.

Holder said Pemiscot County deputies, along with medical and other law enforcement personnel, were called to a home north of Pascola just after 7 a.m. Wednesday in response to a report of a child not breathing.  The mother initially said she and the child were involved in a four-wheeler wreck just after 6 a.m. Wednesday, but a criminal investigation began after authorities began getting conflicting stories.

The mother is not in custody at this time, Ryan said.
