R.A. Dickey pitches Mets past Cardinals 4-0

NEW YORK (AP) - R.A. Dickey took a three-hitter into the ninth inning and Ike Davis hit a three-run homer, leading the Mets to a 4-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday that gave New York its first series victory in more than a month.

Angel Pagan tripled and scored twice for the Mets, who took 2 of 3 from St. Louis to drop the Cardinals into second place in the NL Central, a half-game behind idle Cincinnati. New York won for only the fifth time in 18 games but improved to 28-12 in its past 40 at home.

Working on three days' rest, Dickey (7-4) showed no ill effects of the sore left hip that prompted manager Jerry Manuel to pull the knuckleballer out of a scoreless game Sunday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Ty Wigginton's sacrifice fly in the 11th inning broke the game's final tie and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Kansas City Royals 6-5 on Thursday night to snap a 5-game losing streak.

Corey Patterson homered with two outs in the eighth off Kansas City's Robinson Tejeda to tie the score 5-5. Nick Markakis led off the third for the Orioles with his ninth home run.

Wigginton's second sacrifice fly of the game scored Brian Roberts in the 11th and was off Blake Wood (0-2), the fifth Kansas City pitcher.

Five Baltimore relievers combined to throw 7 2-3 scoreless innings with David Hernandez (5-7), who allowed one hit and struck out three in two innings, to get the victory. Alfredo Simon logged his 15th save in 17 opportunities.

Royals call up Holland from AAA

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - The Royals have promoted Greg Holland from AAA Omaha to fill the roster spot of outfielder Scott Podsednik, who was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Royals announced the move before Thursday's game against the Baltimore Orioles.

The 24-year-old Holland was 3-3 with a 3.81 ERA and three saves for Omaha. The former 10th-round draft pick out of Western Kentucky has been especially good recently, going 1-0 with a 1.10 ERA and 30 strikeouts in his last 10 outings. He's been holding hitters to a .161 average.

Podsednik was traded to the Dodgers on Wednesday for a pair of minor-league prospects. His replacement by Holland means Kansas City is carrying 13 pitchers, including eight relievers.

Chiefs TE Cottam on unable to perform list

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - The Kansas City Chiefs have placed tight end Brad Cottam on the reserve/physically unable to perform list.

The team did not explain the move in making the announcement Thursday.

The 6-foot-7, 269-pound Cottam has played in 24 games with eight starts for Kansas City over the past two seasons, catching 16 passes for 183 yards.

Cottam was drafted in the third round by the Chiefs in 2008.

Bradford no-show for first rookie workout

ST. LOUIS (AP) - The most prominent St. Louis Rams newcomer missed the first day of rookie workouts. Teammates expected to see quarterback Sam Bradford soon enough.

Offensive tackle Jason Smith was the second overall pick last year and he and Bradford have the same agents, Tom Condon and Ben Dogra of St. Louis. Smith signed a 5-year contract in time for the first full-squad workout.

This year, the first workout is Saturday.

Coach Steve Spagnuolo said Thursday there was nothing new in negotiations but he remained optimistic. Veteran A.J. Feeley, who'll be the starter until Bradford's ready, said missing one practice is no big deal.

The Rams held two workouts Thursday, with several veterans coming off injuries included in the mix.

MIAA official named AD at Pittsburg State

PITTSBURG, Kan. (AP) - The commissioner of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association has been named the new athletics director at Pittsburg State University.

Jim Johnson will be introduced Friday as the new athletic director, Pittsburg State President said Thursday.

Johnson will begin the job on Sept. 7. He'll replace Chuck Broyles, who in May announced that he would begin phased retirement.

Johnson was chosen from more than 50 applicants after a national search. He will be paid $120,000.

Before going to MIAA in 2007, Johnson was athletics director at Texas A&M University-Commerce. Before that he was associate athletics director at the University of Central Missouri.

Seneca coaches placed on probation after hazing

SENECA, Mo. (AP) - The Seneca Board of Education has placed the school's head football coach and some assistants on probation after a hazing incident during a football camp at Pittsburg State University.

The school board issued a news release Wednesday saying coach Rod Townsend and assistant coaches who were at the camp last month were placed on one year probation. The board declined to say how many assistants were involved.

Pittsburg State University police interviewed more than 50 students who attended the early June camp. Eleven Seneca players have been charged with assaulting younger players on the team at the camp.

In its statement, the school board says it found no evidence the coaches had any advanced knowledge of the hazing, were aware of the hazing or tried to cover up the incident.
