Darian Egan has severe burns to his face, arms, and hands.by Zakk Gammon - email | Twitter
MALDEN, MO (KFVS) - The health care battle hits home for a local family. Darian Egan considers himself lucky to be alive after a gasoline explosion. He says he's now working on getting better for his wife and baby on the way without insurance.
"I was caught in the middle of the explosion. It was a fireball," Egan said.
Egan's face, hands, and arms were injured.
"My face got mostly flash burns," he says. "My arms are third degree."
The explosion happened on September 14 when Egan was buring trash on some land he and his wife recently purchased.
"Someone told me that I had left the gas cap off the gas can," Egan says.
The incident left him in a St. Louis hospital for a week.
"I'm not ready to be home," Egan said. "I'm in complete agony. It's like an iron's on my thigh. The fire just doesn't go away."
Because of a pre-existing condition, Egan doesn't have insurance and doesn't qualify for disability.
"I don't have anyone to help take care of me, or my wife and the home we're gonna buy and put on this property. Now I'm not gonna be able to work or do anything for several months. She's pregnant, and I want to do the best for my family I can," Egan said.
Even through all of his trouble, though, he says he's thankful he survived. Now he says he's working recovering while trying to find the money to pay for his medical bills.
A local bank is collecting donations on Egan's behalf; you can send them to any First Community Bank location in the Heartland.
