Rams' Jackson keeping goals to self

Associated Press - September 11, 2009 5:14 AM ET

ST. LOUIS (AP) - St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson still sets goals for the season. He's just not making them public anymore.

Jackson says he's learned from experience that falling short of his expectations will undoubtedly lead to criticism. Jackson's solution: Keep the numbers to himself and just play the best he can while trying to set an example for a young team.

Jackson is coming off his fourth straight 1,000-yard season despite missing a month with injuries. The Rams open the season on Sunday in Seattle, and they plan to build their offense around the 235-pound Jackson.

Jackson didn't get many carries in the preseason but said he took plenty of hits in practice and is ready to go.
