PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has hired an engineering firm to design the superstructure for a new US 60 bridge over the Tennessee River at Paducah. The contractor is URS Corp., of Louisville.

The KYTC reports about 9,000 vehicles per day travel across the existing bridge, which opened as a toll bridge in 1931. It's also known as the Ledbetter Bridge and the George Rogers Clark Memorial Bridge.

Construction of the piers for the new bridge, a separate contract, is expected to be complete by the end of 2009. This comes after an almost year-long delay due to high water in the Tennessee River. C.J. Manhan Construction Co., of Grove City, OH, is the contractor for the piers, which will cost $28.4 million.

Total cost of the bridge is estimated at about $80 million, with completion expected in 2012 or 2013.
