Man arrested after leading police on a two-county chase in southern Illinois

Suspect arrest in Union County, IL chase

UNION COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - A man has been arrested after leading law enforcement on a chase through two counties in southern Illinois on Tuesday, April 16.

On Wednesday, April 17, officers identified the man as Esley Dee Cornelius.

According to officers at the scene, at 5:30 p.m. officers in Jonesboro, Illinois responded to a man waving a gun near a home.

When officers arrive, they were told the man had already left and that he drove south on Highway 127 in a Mercedes Benz.

The suspect, later identified as Cornelius, evaded police and made his way to Sandusky, Ill. There he was nudged and forced to wreck. He then ran away on foot, but was arrested shortly.

Alexander County Sheriff’s Office assisted on the scene.

Cornelius was arrested on charges of evading law enforcement. The formal charges are pending.

He was taken to the Union County Jail.
