(Gray News) – An injured bald eagle that was rescued from rail tracks in metro Washington, DC, on Wednesday will have to be euthanized, the animal care center it was turned over to tweeted Thursday.
Service was interrupted Wedensday on the Washington Metro blue and silver lines as the eagle laid near a rail close to the Morgan Boulevard station, east of the city in Maryland. Power had to be cut along the track and a team of eight animal control specialists carefully corralled the eagle as it tried to hop away, ending a saga that had taken on a humorous metaphorical tone online.
However DC City Wildlife tweeted on Thursday that it will be a sad end.
The group said the eagle’s injured wing - which led to its getting stuck on the tracks - was not reparable, and therefore “humane euthanasia is the only responsible option.”
“After a thorough examination, review of the x–rays, and consultations with other wildlife veterinarians, the opinion of the experts is unanimous and sad: the multiple fractures in the bird’s wing cannot be repaired and humane euthanasia is the only responsible option,” DC City Wildlife tweeted.
