ISP: Driver falls asleep in crash on US 45 hitting semi

CARRIER MILLS, IL (KFVS) - A southern Illinois woman was taken to a hospital after falling asleep at the wheel while driving on US 45 near Carrier Mills, Illinois.

It happened at 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 13. The road was shut down for several hours and detours were in place.

According to a preliminary report from Illinois State Police Dist. 19, the driver of a Dodge pickup, Karen Cole, 68, of Carrier Mills, Ill. was driving southbound approaching the city limits when her truck crossed the northbound lanes and left the road.

The driver managed to get the truck back on the road, crossed the northbound lane, then went off the road again.

The driver again lost control as the pickup crossed the center line. The Dodge truck struck the driver’s side of a semi truck.

The semi’s driver tried to avoid the pickup but was unsuccessful.

Illinois State Police said the woman told them that she fell asleep while driving.

She was taken to an area hospital by ambulance.

Both vehicles were towed.

The woman was charged with improper lane usage.

ISP was assisted at the crash scene by the the Saline Co. Sheriff’s Office, Carrier Mills and Harrisburg Fire Departments, Saline County Ambulance, Bishop’s Towing and Tri-State Towing.
