JEFFERSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - A two-vehicle crash involving an Illinois State Police squad car led to moderate injuries for a Trooper.
State Police said the crash was on Sunday, Feb. 10 at 4:52 p.m. It happened on Interstate 57 in the northbound lanes near mile point 80 in Jefferson County, Illinois.
According to police, a 2018 Toyota Corolla driven by 47-year-old Richardo Antonio Accioly of Raytown, Mo failed to yield to a stationary emergency vehicle.
Officials said the Trooper was called to a citizen’s report of potholes on I-57. When the Trooper arrived they found potholes in the passing lane and told ISP dispatch that IDOT needed to respond to fill them.
The Trooper turned on his emergency lights and positioned his squad car in a way that prevented other drivers from hitting the potholes.
According to officials, Accioly was headed northbound following another vehicle in the passing lane. He had one passenger, Juliana Cristina Savanas E. Silva, 41 from Brazil.
Accioly told officials that the vehicle he was following abruptly moved into the driving lane and he attempted to avoid hitting the squad car but was unable to change lanes in time.
Accioly and his passenger was not injured according to officials. The Trooper was taken to an area hospital with moderate injuries.
