  • Put all of your tax documents in one place
  • File your taxes as soon as possible. According to Bowles, the IRS is backed up following the government shutdown
  • Be careful if you use on online resource, especially if you have a complex tax return

“When you get into having any type of assets of your own where you have depreciation or business expenses, that doesn’t always know how to handle everything properly, and you can really put things in and end up owning money later on because you didn’t prepare your return correctly," said Bowles when discussing online tax resources.

She said it’s hard to predict how long it’ll take to get refunds this year due to the government shutdown, but it’s typically two to three weeks.
