MARION, IL (KFVS) - A welcome home took place after the return of the Veterans Honor Flight of Southern Illinois Flight number four on Tuesday, October 16.
The veterans took a free one day trip to Washington, D.C. to visit memorials honoring their service.
They left Marion at 6 a.m. on Tuesday and were set to return at 8:30 p.m.
“The minute they land, their adrenaline, their faces as they come through the freedom path and parade down through the terminal. You can tell they are just ecstatic and the crowd feeds off of that and they’re cheering. It’s just a wonderful thing for the community," said Organizer Tracey Glenn.
They are expected to have up to 3,000 spectators to welcome them home.
“We’re thrilled to have completed the fourth Honor Flight from Southern Illinois and thank our partners for their support,” said Bryan Questelle, Chairman of the Veterans Honor Flight of Southern Illinois Board of Directors. “We want our veterans to know that the Southern Illinois community supports them and thanks them for their service.”
The first Honor Flight from southern Illinois took place in April 2017.
Flight number five is scheduled for spring 2019.
